A family electric bike is ideal for short everyday journeys: commuting to work, taking the children to school, shopping and running errands. For urban journeys of up to 30 km, an e-bike can replace a significant share of car trips, with lower costs, less time in traffic and no parking hassle.

And yes, we know. Some days, family life feels like a small-scale logistics operation: taking the children where they need to go, getting to work, shopping, running errands and somehow still finding time to breathe. In the middle of it all, reaching for the car becomes almost automatic, even though traffic is still a nightmare and finding a parking space is not always easy.

That is why electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular, particularly for short everyday journeys: a simple, practical and even more enjoyable alternative.

Which everyday journeys can be made by electric bike?

Everyday journeys that can be made by electric bike include commuting to work, taking the children to school, stopping at the supermarket, visiting family or heading into the city centre, with most urban journeys covering less than 30 km.

In practice, most everyday urban journeys are under 30 km, a comfortable distance for an electric bike with an average range of 100 km per charge.

The idea is not to replace the car in every situation. It is about no longer using it simply out of habit or convenience.

Is it possible to use an electric bike with children?

Yes. Children can be transported on an electric bike from around 9 months old (or once the baby’s neck muscles are strong enough to keep their head upright), using a child seat (up to approximately 35 kg) or a trailer for one or two children (max. 44 kg). The right option depends on the child’s age and weight, as well as compatibility with the bike.

There are specific solutions for carrying children, such as child seats and trailers, which should be chosen according to age, weight and compatibility with the bicycle.

For many families, this turns an ordinary journey into a fun moment to share. The ride to school or the park is no longer simply about “getting from A to B”; it becomes part of the day itself — and potentially one of the children’s fondest childhood memories.

From what age and at what weight can I carry a child on an electric bike?

As a general rule: a child seat can be used from around 9 months old (up to 22 kg), while a trailer can carry one or two children (up to 44 kg in total). Always check the product certification and compatibility with your bike model.

Can you go shopping by electric bike?

Yes. An electric bike can be used for everyday shopping with panniers of around [X] litres and a front basket, providing enough capacity for midweek groceries and quick errands.

And there is one advantage that is hard to ignore: you can park close to the door and carry on with your day without wasting time driving around looking for a space.

Can an e-bike replace a second car?

An electric bike can replace a second car for families with short, regular journeys and reduce car use in other situations. It all depends on the distances involved, the routes, the available infrastructure and each household’s individual needs.

In terms of cost, keeping a second car can amount to several thousand euros a year once insurance, fuel, maintenance and parking are taken into account, while the running costs of an e-bike are considerably lower. For families with short and regular journeys, the savings can be significant.

It is worth counting how many car journeys each week could be made by electric bike: if there are two, three or four, the difference is already significant.

Getting started without overcomplicating things

There is no need to reinvent your routine overnight. Start with one simple journey: a trip to a café, a small shopping trip or a short ride at the weekend. Then try incorporating the bike into other journeys. Over time, an e-bike can go from being simply a leisure option to becoming a genuine family mobility tool. Ultimately, changing the way we travel starts with one simple question: for each journey, is the car really necessary?

Frequently asked questions

Is an electric bike useful for families?
Yes. An electric bike is a practical solution for a family’s short everyday journeys — work, school, shopping and errands — and, with the right accessories, it can also be used to carry children. For urban journeys of up to 30 km, it is an agile alternative to the car.

Can you go shopping by e-bike?
Yes. With panniers, baskets or a suitable rear rack, an electric bike can easily carry midweek groceries while saving you the time normally spent looking for a parking space. Discover all the transport solutions available from Beeq here.

Can an e-bike replace a car?
Yes, and for many families it can replace a very significant share of everyday car journeys. For short and medium-distance trips, such as commuting to work, taking the children to school, shopping or running errands, an electric bike can be a practical, economical and agile alternative. Where suitable infrastructure is available and the family routine allows for it, an e-bike can even reduce the need to own a car, bringing lower costs, less time in traffic and simpler, more sustainable mobility.

How far can you comfortably travel on an e-bike?
An electric bike typically has a range of up to 100 km per charge, which is more than enough to cover most everyday urban journeys, usually under 30 km per trip.

Behind BEEQ - How our ebikes are made

Designed, created and produced in Portugal, BEEQ was born out of a need to jump start a movement of change.

At a critical moment for mobility when the world is beginning to think of the bicycle as a safe and healthy alternative to move around in cities, BEEQ emerges as the solution for those looking to make the smart choice - European-produced ebikes, with a focus in quality and at a competitive price.

BEEQ is a brand of RTE, one of the leading bicycles manufacturers in Europe, based in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.

Understanding and believing in the potential and the role of electric bicycles for the sustainability of our planet, the brand started as a small project within the company to explore the know-how and high-quality standards developed over its years in the industry.

Joining the mobility revolution that is inspiring cities and communities takes time and a lot of hard work.

The brand was "in vitro" for 3 years while we tried hard to launch with the best range possible.

We perfected the models, the logo design, the strategy and message. Looking for the right partners who share the same DNA as our company, who care for the sensational experience an e-bike can offer as much as we do.

Production processes where adjusted, and new technologies developed to have one of the most inovative ebike production lines out there.

No detail was left to chance.

From a small laboratory, to the big city

The result of the BEEQ project is a set of reliable, urban, sophisticated, competent and fun e-bikes.

Launched in July 2020, amid one of the craziest periods of recent history, the brand helped contribute to the unprecedented cycling boom we witness today.

Gorgeous, high quality and well made e-bikes that can be purchased, safely, anywhere in Europe, in the comfort of your own home.

That knowloge and standards are now being applied to make BEEQ a trustworthy, high quality staple in the electric bicycle market.

Our brand is made up of a young spirited and ambitious team with scrappy product developers, designers and engineers, proudly making reliable and affordable electric bikes in Europe for the whole world to enjoy.
